In addition to having the big 3, spurs continue to get the best x's and y's to always have the best 5 on the floor
http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/1186975533299330.xml&coll=7

The only thing the other 29 teams can rest their hat on is that the spurs probably needed someone a little bigger, younger, more athletic
plus the last 2 guys from the pacific northwest that the spurs stumbled over themselves to get (brent barry, steve smith) didn't do so well

he is a great pickup for the spurs, he is a very good defender and can defend multiple postions, his outside shot improved alot last year. Maybe a player that can take minutes of the agein bowen so he dosent get too tired durin the season.

Spurs keep getting spursier. I wonder how many GMs woke up today, read 'Spurs Add Tough Perimeter Defender', and went back to bed?

Personally, I'd be tempted to start Udoka and move Finley to the second unit - then, not only do we have a Manu-Fin squad waiting in the wings, our starting five is possibly the greatest defensive monster the League has seen in a decade. Spot Bowen and Udoka up at the corners, give Parker the ball at the top, and watch teams decide whether they'd rather single-team TD or give up seven thousand French lay-ups per game.

Always remember: there's no 'I' in TEAM, but there's an 'I' and a 'ME' in IME.

it's not like there was big competition at his spot in Portland. so we'll have to see how much he can play with Ginobili, Bowen, Finley and Barry.

what do you make of his age?compared to Bowen who is 36, Udoka is "only" 30. so is he really Bowen's successor as i've read it, or is he a not expensive insurance just in case old Bowen gets injured?

Hey Jude,

In the jeet kun do that is NBA roster management, Udoka is a temporary piece in an ever-changing puzzle. SA needed another defensive specialist with range to stretch the floor against Dallas while keeping Dirk and Howard tied up - Udoka should do that nicely.

i don't think bowen getting injured is the problem, depth i believe is the issue here

awesome signing. When the spurs failed to get hill I wanted this guy. He is so bowen like. And bowen will just teach him to become better.

Also note that players like this who rely on defense also rely on hard work. He will pick up the spurs system very quickly. The problem is when you get a talanted scorer who is in the league by pure scoring talent. Those players have trouble not this guy. Cant wait to see him in action.

Also hopefully he will give bowen a big rest during regular season. Save him up for the playoffs

As someone mentioned above. The biggest problem the spurs have agaisnt the mavs is when the mavs go small they had no one to defend dirk and howard at the same time. Elson might help out against dirk but now they have options.

Heh, sad that a 30-year-old counts as "adding youth" for these graybeards. But I'm excited about Udoka - if only because he further increases the unstoppable-force-meets-immovable-object factor in Spurs-Suns games this year.

The Suns got sunsier - shed some size and defense, added some flash and finesse.

The Spurs got spursier - just call them 'Team Lockdown'.

Put it all together, and hopefully you get seven games of mayhem, bloodshed and superb basketball in the Western Conference Playoffs next year.

Or, y'know, a lot of bitching and conspiracy theories. I'd prefer the former though.

LOL. That's true. Udoka's a boring but effective player. Perfect fit for the team.

Udoka is great. You'll like him. If last year was a contract year for Martell Webster you wouldn't have got Udoka.
