The Spurs waived Vassilis Spanoulis who they acquired from the Rockets this offseason.  He promptly signed in Greece with the club Panathinaikos.

well he didn't want to play there ... and i understand that he let off his contract ... with the open roster spot the spurs signed their 05 1st rnd pick Mahinmi

he wanted to go back overseas before the rockets traded him, now the spurs just made the rockets a better team

well a little competition doesn't hurt anyone  :lol:

seriously though i agree ... helping a division rival makes no sense

as for spanoulis i am very dissapointed that he quit on the nba ... and quite immatue of him ... he could have easily faught udrih and vaughn for the back-up pg position ... and be a member of the world champions ...but i guess life in greece is better suited for him

at first i thought we equally helped each other because the spurs always make the best of international players but surprisingly he left them hanging

FYI:

The Spurs didn't trade for V-Span. They traded for a trade-exception wearing V-Span's shoes. Basically, San Antonio paid Houston Scola's rights and the chance to lose V-Span for the sake of dumping Jackie Butler.

V-Span's pretty good, but he was never going to stay in the US and the Spurs knew that. We knew this was coming, this was the plan all along.

Yeh, I really wanted scolar or whoever he is to join the spurs. But we had to many bigs. Bonner played well for us and oberto fits perfectly with TD, so there was no need.

This was just a roster space/ money trade. Remember the rockets gave money to the spurs that would pay off the contract of V Span and the spurs dumped butler who has talent but no worth ethic.
