Center, Haywood is terrible. Etan and Calvin are good backups but there not the best starters.

I agree. This is obvious though! Etan Thomas is the best out of these three. Brendan Haywood would be a good backup on most teams. Calvin Booth is a very good third string! The pos. is solid but not the best!

Haywood could be a decent starting center in the league but he's absolutely terrified of contact, something that hasn't changed since his freshman year in college.  Etan Thomas is tougher than Haywood, but is more akin to a bull in a china shop, he has absolutely no finesse.  It'll be interesting to see if any of their two young big men can develop into anything this season.  Both Blatche and the Ukrainian looked good in the summer league and Peter John Ramos didn't look inept playing in the World Championships, but they're all a year or two (or maybe more) away from effectively contributing.

i definitely vouch for thomas being the best, but steve is right the young players are only a few years away from competing and making an impact

Etan Thomas is probably the best of the three. Then you look at his contract, and that's when all the fun starts.

I think Haywood and Thomas could be good backups for any team, but Booth not on any. None are really starting material.

This is actually the weakest position for a lot of teams. I think they are going to start Haywood, use Etan more, and Calvin is their insurance plan.

true but that is due to the difficulty of the position, there are many that are above average but yes there are also some that are weak, more weak than above average obviously

Are any of you Wizards fans or watch at least 70 of their games each season??? Because if you were you would not say dumb things like Etan Thomas is better than Brendan Haywood. I'm sorry for getting agitated but Etan Thomas is the most offensively handicapped player on the team sans Michael Ruffin. You say he is good because he comes in for 20 minutes a game and gets a few tough rebounds (he like to writhe his body after each rebound to show how powerful a rebounder he is-even if its a free rebound) and easy finishes. Brendan Haywood, even though he is not playing well enough to be considered a good center, he is a solid starter who is a good defender and can get some good shots off and power some home dunks. Etan Thomas will have one random game where he will get lucky and score 17 points and thats it. He is a valuable backup but he cannot start and the Wizards really need to get a good starting center (Haywood doesn't seem to be able to cut it) Someone like Jamal Magloire would be perfect.

I think many of you guys are too harsh on Haywood. He is certainly not a top center, but I would rate him just about middle of the pack among starting centers in the league. CBS Sportsline rankes Haywood at 19 (http://www.sportsline.com/nba/story/8895427), which is just 3 places behind the medium. But quite frankly, not much difference from 11 to 20, and I am not sure I would pick them over Haywood. (Jerome James at 15? Give me a break, I would certainly not want him!) Most of them also carry significantly heftier contract than Haywood too.

When you have a center that can't rebound you will be in trouble.
