I found this when I was looking at it the other day and thought I'd share if anyone was interested.

As many know we got a pick from Philadelphia for the Carney trade. This was Utah's pick. Many also know that it is top 22 protected this year and top 15 protected next year.

Some of you may know that this also ties into New York's pick that is owed to Utah for whatever reason and this is where it gets interesting.

New York's pick is lottery protected this year and unprotected next year so everyone assumed that Utah would be adding a top 5 pick to their core in 2010. However the Knicks have had a resurgence of late and there is a chance now that they could sneak into the playoffs. This is where it gets really interesting.

Assuming they do and we are allowed to get Utah's pick then we actually get the better of the 2 picks. So if New York has the 15th pick and Utah the 23rd then we would be entitled to the 15th pick. How sweet would that be?

But first we need to get a chance at the Utah pick, to even be allowed to choose between theirs and NYK.

Utah's needs to be top-8, so they need to get to the 2nd round of the playoffs for us to get their pick (or NYK pick, if NY is in the playoffs).

It's not how far they get into the playoffs but their record. If they finish with 1 of the 8 best records in the NBA this season we have a chance at their pick. For example in 2007 Dallas had the 30th pick despite losing in the first round to Golden State.

Ha, that's what I thought at the beggining, but one guy I know claimed the playoffs count.

That doesn't make sense if Utah had this deal with Philadelphia and they just basically gave us that package so it should include New York's pick.

As for the playoffs I gave an example. There's no way the playoffs count if Dallas had the 30th pick after being knocked out in the first round.
