As many of you know we have a lack of talent at both guard spots. Normally Summer League players barely get considered for contracts but with 2 of the top undrafted free agents on our team, both of who are guards, I think one or both has a good chance of making the roster. But if the team brings back Carney there will only be 1 roster spot left, so by saying that let's look at the pros and cons of both players:

Paul Harris

Pros:
  • Athletic
  • Comes from a good program and is familiar with Johnny Flynn
  • Great defender
  • Outstanding potential for an undrafted free agent
  • Chose Minnesota over Cleveland (and Chicago), showing that he would want to play there
  • Seems to have a good work ethic
  • NBA ready body
  • Plays off guard, a position of need for Minnesota right now

Cons:
  • Raw offensively; struggles to create his own shot and isn't a good shooter
  • Was billed as the next Carmelo Anthony but never panned out; possible issues?

Ben Woodside

Pros:
  • Strong leader
  • Excellent shooter
  • Good on the pick and roll
  • Showed good point guard skills
  • Nice first step
  • Good ball handler; can get where he wants to go on the court
  • A local; could help bring in/excite fans
  • Strong work ethic

Cons:
  • Despite having a nice first step his lateral quickness is average at best; will struggle to defend because of it
  • Struggled at Portsmouth against more athletic defenders then he was used to; could be a problem playing in the NBA
  • Doesn't have the best potential and what you see is likely what you'll get

Personally I want Paul Harris but that's because I still think we need more perimeter defence which is something he's good at. Actually I'd like both, but if I had to choose it'd be Harris.

What are your thoughts? Who would you choose?

I saw Paul Harris, as well. He's strong player with capabilities on defense and the boards that can make him better than who he's going against. Lets not kid ourselves, though. The 15th man on the team doesn't matter a whole lot...

It's just nice to talk about something that doesn't start with R

True story. Who really cares about it, to be honest.
