http://www.thestar.com/sports/olympics/article/681185THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Tiger Woods keeps an eye on his shot during a practice round ahead of the 2009 PGA Championship in Chaska, Minn. (Aug. 11, 2009) Baseball never had a chance to return to the Olympic Games and not only because no one would take the chance on making all the stars pass a pee test.
Baseball was doomed because it didn't fit into International Olympic Committee pooh-bah Jacques Rogge's view of Olympic sports, which is Eurocentric to start with and seeks to include, aside from soccer, only the absolute best in the big sports.
So golf is back for the first time since 1904, which means Tiger Woods – or, since Woods will be 40 in 2016, Rory McIlroy or whomever is world No. 1 by then – will be flying down to Rio, or Chicago, or Madrid, to hit the small ball for his country.
Golf wanted this, obviously. It has a World Cup that gathers about zero attention. It wanted a bigger worldwide splash to, as they say, "grow the game" and the group behind the push included the Royal and Ancient, the USGA, the PGA of America, the European Tour, Augusta National and other heavy hitters. Just guessing, but do you think any IOC members can get a nice tee time anywhere? I know 2016 is hella far from now, but I figured we could discuss this now. This is for ILLMATIC74 who doesn't think golf is a sport, haha... I like the inclusion of golf obviously, but rugby is another great addition (the article barely mentions womens boxing but yeah it's in there). Rugby is a sport that might be foreign to some people and this will give everyone a chance to check it out. I had a feeling baseball would be snubbed but part of me was hoping they would include it again. Oh well. Thoughts?

What, no dodgeball, cricket, or slamball? It's about time they became olympic sports! At least I'm glad Rugby was added.

I would like to see pogs added to that list, if it's going to be in Chicago they better have their sh*t together.

The problem with baseball is that the MLB refuses to suspend their season for the Olympics similar to what hockey does, which is why they've created the World Baseball Classic.
Rugby would be pretty cool to see in the Olympics and the exposure it would get will help in its popularity a lot.

I agree with Rugby, no reason for it not to be there already, same goes with Golf, which may be more relaxed, but it's the physical skills of those involved that determine the outcome, which is what constitutes a sport for me.

Well I'm more concerned about Chicago getting the 2016 Olympics if anything. Mainly because there's talk of some events being held here in Indianapolis too.

Yeah, there's a lot of options of where to put things, Indy isn't far away at all, neither is Milwaukee, there's a lot of places to put things. There's a lot of reasons why Chicago's currently the frontrunner.

I'm actually against rugby union being in the Olympics. There's enough international rugby already and there's a World Cup every four years as it is.

Well basketball also has the World Basketball championships every four years. Putting Rugby in the Olympics would popularize the sport and other events (the World Cup, Club level competition, etc.) more than anything else can because it will have the largest audience of anybody. Is there a better dream for the sport to have it being nationally televised on NBC in front of the whole United States and other networks across the globe?
