Okay, about time I did this to give you all enough time to do the frickin' math here before the season starts. The theory is to make predictions of regular season records for every team in the league while having it balance numerically as a real NBA season could play out.

RULES

Deadline for submitting your predictions is by the opening tip of the opening game of the season. That means no edits of your post with time and date stamps past this point. Please use only one post for your predictions and feel free to make a dummy post right away that you can edit later so we can keep most of them near the top of the thread.

On to the guidelines for making your predictions.

1. The combined win-loss total (ie. total games played) for each conference is 1230, ie. 82 games per team * 15 teams = 1230.

2. The results for one conference are necessarily the mirror image of the opposite conference, eg. 2007/08, East record was 582-648, West record was 648-582.

3. Your conference win-loss numbers must balance according to these rules by opening tip or you are disqualified.

Here are the W/L records for the past few seasons showing the differential between East and West:

2008/2009: East: 621-609, West: 609-621
2007/2008: East: 582-648, West: 648-582
2006/2007: East: 583-647, West: 647-583
2005/2006: East: 588-642, West: 642-588

As you can see, there was a sizable swing to the East last year.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Start by guessing how strong you think each conference will be and give each conference both a win and loss total (which add to 1230).

2. Order all of the teams in each conference roughly by strength.

3. Start filling in records for the best teams, the worst teams and any teams you feel you have a good handle on what their record should be.

4. Realize that you're going to have to tinker A LOT to make it fit. Usually this means that you have too many wins assigned and you have to make a few middle-tier teams worse. The most common mistake will probably be not have truly terrible records for the worst few teams in the league.

5. Add the following next to the records to show your predicted divisional winners: (p) for Pacific; (sw) for Southwest; (nw) for Northwest; (a) for Atlantic; (c) for Central; (se) for Southeast.

6. Make damn sure that each conference win-loss total combines to 1230! Make sure the East is a mirror image of the West!

HOW YOU SCORE

At the end of the regular season I'll do some number crunching and declare a winner. Here's how the scoring breaks down:

For every correctly positioned team (eg. Lakers finish 1st in West), 3 points.
For every team that is within two wins of your prediction (eg. actual 66-16, you pick 64-18), 3 points.
For every team positioned within two places (eg. Bulls finish 5th, you pick 7th), 1 point.
For every team that is within three to six wins of your prediction, 1 point.

No points for position changes wrong by three or more.
No points for wins totals out by seven or more.

5 bonus points for each correctly picked conference winner.
5 bonus points for each correctly picked conference bottom-feeder.
2 bonus points for every correctly picked division winner.

Go here for an example and further reference.

Good luck!

Please don't quote other people's rankings. I'll have enough trouble collating this as it is if it stretches into multiple pages.  Tongue
