Is that a huge fail though? The puck took a big bounce a few inches in front of the glove, are the goalies really expected to react that fast?

yea i saw that jit on SC the other day, dude got rocked, had trouble skating to the bench, and forgot his stick

Yes. It was a flukey goal, but you're supposed to get your body right in front of the puck on dump-ins like that.
