He moves well, he seems to really know the game, and even in a sense that will translate to the NBA level. However, unless he's a dominant player, his free throw problems can really be a problem at the next level.

LOL I can't understand you guys' expectations from Asik. Won't he be the backup of Noah? He's a good rebounder, very good shot blocker and good low post scorer. And he has the body type to translate his game into the NBA level. He's a perfect backup for Noah. "Dominant player".. Is that what you expect of a 2nd rounder?

"unless he's a dominant player" was the quote. I dont think anyone here expects him to be a dominant player, a solid role player would be nice.

Who called him a dominant player? You seem to be reading something wrong.

Who called him a dominant player? You seem to be reading something wrong. Nobody called. I just said that don't get your expectations higher than him being a backup center in the NBA. It's not like he'll get enough PT to attempt 5 free throws per game and shoot them very inefficiently. So his free throw shooting isn't that significant but he's still working on it right now.

I wasn't saying that in the sense of him possibly becoming a dominant player, I was more talking about it in reference to Shaq, who is probably the only player who has been a horrible free throw shooter yet hasn't had any problems with teams wanting him (until lately) due to that.
Still, even when a player is a backup, if they can't shoot free throws well, then first off, other teams will be more willing to foul them, especially if they're efficient from the floor. On top of that, even if other teams don't foul them more, every free throw counts. I see free throw shooting costing teams games more than many other things out there. It's important for anyone who is on the floor outside of extraordinary circumstances.

Yeah, that totally means he's going to shoot with %100 FT from now on Seriously though, these are very small sample sizes. You should wait for him to play a season in the NBA to label him as a bad free throw shooter for his position.

I agree that the sample sizes are small, Gibson shot horrible from the line the first half of last season and shot much better during the second half, but still, it's not like Asik ever torn it up from the line during his career. He's never been a good free throw shooter.

True but the point is he's getting better and he needs some time before getting labeled in my opinion.
5/8 from free throw line against Slovenia last night.

I agree, and he is looking better, but again, we've had several years to look at him, well, at least 2 years, and it's never been good. We've got a good idea of what he can do from the line at this point. At the same time, that play tonight was pretty sweet.
