Rumor Mill: Gooden still possible

The Bulls will also keep an eye on Cleveland power forward Drew Gooden, a restricted free agent. Gooden appears headed for a sign-and-trade scenario and the Cavs probably don’t want to take any big contracts in return, so a package of Chris Duhon and Michael Sweetney might have a slim chance of working.

“It’s a possibility we’re interested in,” Calvin Andrews, Gooden’s agent, said of the Bulls. “We haven’t talked too much about that happening. It’s up to the Cavs. If something would come up with the Bulls, it would interest us, definitely.”

Ve-ry interesting.  Pax says he wants another veteran on the team.    Bringing back Adrian Griffin was listed as another possibility - hey, another SF !   Rumors are a dime a dozen these days and the chance at Gooden sounds slim but it's a situation worth watching.  Skiles would surely have a tough time keeping everying happy with their playing time should Gooden come on board.  Kind of a good problem to have though...

I'd take him - I think he was held back with the Cavs - very few shot attempts per game.  He's a guy who can create his own shot and rebound - can't speak to his defense.  I'd be interested to hear your reservations...

I'm just saying, I'd rather have Michael Sweetney and/or Darius Songaila, instead of Gooden, if I'm the Bulls.

Mike Sweetney is a solid player off the bench, I don't think he should be thrown under the bus at this point. And Tyrus Thomas is going to struggle to get playing time as it is, Drew Godden would make that even tougher for him. Especially with PJ Brown in front aswell.



And like cucumberjones said, I wouldn't just let Darius Songalia go. Hes a very versitile big man, and can create pretty well himself.

I'll wait and see if Sweetney laid off the ding-dongs in the off season before considering him valuable.  Another guy that can't figure out how to reach his potential.  Hitting the weights and eating right could turn him into a stud but if he hasn't figured it out by now.... He left a lot to be desired last season.  Songalia is already good as gone - out of the Bulls price range now.  I liked the guy - could prove valuable for another team's bench.

Yeah, I think we can both agrue that Sweetney is a player that has never really made anything of his potential. But I don't think that signing Gooden is the answer. Hes going to cost alot, and will be seen as nothing but a bad contract in two years time...

I keep forgetting about Tyrus. You really don't need Gooden now, you've got a great starter, a rookie backup (who knows how good he'll be), and a decent (and overweight) 3rd stringer. Say no to Gooden.

If Songaila is out of your price range, then so is Gooden.

Different situation - Songalia is our own free agent that we don't have the bucks to resign.  Gooden would be a sign and trade in which it was rumored we'd give up Sweetney and Duhon for.  Again, slim chance of it happening but just putting it out there for the masses.

I don't think Gooden is a good edition either. Doesn't  fit the scrappy defensive mold. He's asking for 60/6 yr. contract like nene but is still unproven.

Read up on #19 - the rules are complicated but since Songaila signed with the Bulls as a FA last year he doesn't qualify as a Larry Bird or Early Bird exception.  He looks like a non-Bird type exception which would allow the Bulls to pay him only 120% of what he made last year.  Another team could easily top that so he's gone.

Ahh, I did not know you had to be with a team for 3 years. Thanks for posting, it cleared up a few things for me.

Still, I don't think they should add Gooden. They have PJ and Tyrus.
